Looking into higher education? Rutland has THREE local colleges: Castleton State College, College of St. Joseph and Community College of Vermont.
Castleton State College is Vermont’s first college. Founded in 1787, it's the 18th oldest institution of higher education in the United States. On it's 165-acre campus, they offer more than 30 undergraduate programs and 8 graduate programs and has a 14:1 student/faculty ratio. They currently educate 1700 full-time students, 2/3 of which are Vermonters. Their students represent 19 countries. Castleton has the longest history of service to Vermont and Vermonters of any college in the state. They have 21 buildings on campus, including 2 LEED Gold certified buildings and 11 residence halls. Castleton College is the largest residential college in the Vermont State College system.
The Catholic character of the College of St. Joseph shapes and is shaped by every aspect of college life including student affairs, faculty, administration and staff activities, and curricular and co-curricular programs. It is made up of people of various faiths and the community acknowledges the challenge to serve the needs of the Church and society and recognizes its role to provide a forum for dialogue between the gospel and secular culture. The college offers student-centered undergraduate and graduate programs guided by Christian values that blend theory and practice and prepare students for careers of vital importance to society. They also offer a holistic student development program that fosters personal leadership, civic responsibility, and service to the community.
The Community College of Vermont is Vermont’s second largest college, serving of upwards to 7000 students each semester. With 12 locations and extensive online learning options, their students don’t have to travel far to access the college's 20 degree, as well as 6 certificate programs.
